DC Do's and Don'ts

Lots of traveling, not much time for posting.

I was recently in DC, so I'll list some frugal DC do's and dont's:

Do:
If you need to get into the District from Dulles airport, do check out the schedule for the

Washington Metro 5A bus line. Getting to and from Dulles via public transportation used to be nearly impossible, but now for $3 each way you can ride the Express 5A bus to either Rosslyn or L'Enfant Plaza and take Metro to your final destination. If the 5A bus doesn't meet your needs, check out the

Washington Flyer bus service and pay $9 for a one-way ($16 RT) ride to West Falls Church Metro.
Don't pay $50+ for a cab!

My second Don't isn't exclusive to DC, but don't go to

Maggie Moo's if either your wallet or your waistline is a concern to you! I was in the mood for a little treat, so I strolled in 'ol Maggie's and ordered a small cup of ice cream. The price was $5.33 and the potion was much too large. A smaller portion for a smaller price would have made me much happier. Furthermore, the ice cream was decent, but nothing to moo home about.

Sounds like I should start reading your blog about the DC stuff. My son and his wife are moving up close to DC and will be working there.

Thanks! I had been planning on taking Washington Flyer on my upcoming trip, but I'll look in to the 5A --- If I can save $10 round-trip, I can afford a cup or two of that Maggie Moos! Smile
Can I get to Mount Vernon using public transportation?

I loved the DC Metro when I visited DC in the late 90s. Reminds me a lot like the Paris Metro - but with fewer things to buy underground.

scfr - if you have a PDA like a Palm, check out the free program Metro - it has up to date public transit schedules of hundreds of cities around the world. It would surprise me very much if Washington DC wasn't in it.

If you have a friend that can pick you up, the Dulles airport has a free "cell phone waiting area" where you can park a car and wait for you to call to come and pick you up at the terminal. I did it once, it was very convenient.

Hey SCFR- you can take public transportation to Mt Vernon. Just take the Yellow Line to Huntington and then catch the Fairfax Connector Bus 151 (assuming that by Mt Vernon you mean George Washington's home and not the town of Mt Vernon).

Check out: http://www.wmata.com/tripplanner_d/TripPlanner_Form_Solo.cfm to plan your trip!
